Our school is an alternative school with an open-optional philosophy. This implies that we encourage an intrinsic love of learning through the use of inquiry and project-based learning. I teach a K/1 class, which means that I have my students for two years. This allows me to build a solid and meaningful relationship with each of my students.
In our classroom, we foster a love of learning.
My students are encouraged to take risks, try new things, and ask questions. They are taught how to self-manage their behaviors and actions, and are constantly being encouraged to dig deeper into their learning. My role as their teacher is to support and mentor my students through their journey to becoming life-long learners.
My Project
The students in my classroom absolutely love reading workshop! During this time, my students are able to pull books that are at their independent reading level, and get swept away into the magical world of stories! Reading growth is seen daily as students conquer tricky words, develop good reading habits, and grow their love of reading!
In order to provide my students with books that capture their imaginations, as well as support their reading journey, my students desperately need more leveled books.
Access to more books would provide my students with increased opportunities to practice their reading skills, as well as introduce my students to other stories and adventures. Currently, my students are limited to the leveled books available in our classroom, meaning that students often have to share or decrease the amount of books they are reading that week. These leveled books will ensure that my students can read more and more and more on their journey to becoming independent and confident readers!
