My students need 10 chapter books from "All Aboard Reading" to "Young Cam Jansen" at their reading level to keep them engaged during Reader"s Workshop.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"I finished reading all of these books!" This is what many of my first graders tell me every morning during Reader's Workshop. Sadly, coming from teaching kindergarten, I don't have more books at their level to keep them engaged during reading time.
At my school, we have Reader's Workshop as part of our balanced reading curriculum.
Reader's Workshop allows students to read books at their "just right level." Every student has the opportunity to feel successful as they read books appropriate for them.
My students love Reader's Workshop time. They love reading and talking about their books.
My Project
Reader's need reading options! These books would allow my classroom library to grow, giving each student more choices. These chapter books will sustain them reading longer than shorter texts. Having double sets will also allow for book partnerships. Partners can select to read the same book and discuss it during partner reading time.
If I had read and reread every book available several times, I'd probably get bored of reading.
I can't allow this to happen to my students. More books will give them more reading materials to choose from. More choices means more reading!
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
