Some of my students need books that present stories/genres in unique ways. The AKJ books provide a comic book format to teach genre and allows students to visualize the story events. This will capture the attention of my reluctant readers and further "reel-in" my students who already adore reading!
I teach second grade in Nashville, Tennessee.
My school is a Title I, urban public school. Most of my students come from poverty or homes that are just making "ends" meet. This year I have a group of very sweet, energetic second graders. My parents are very supportive and are doing what they can to help their children be successful in school.
This is only my second year in second grade. I am still working hard to collect engaging, high quality materials for my students to use to reinforce and practice the skills and standards they need extra practice with. These requested materials are high interest, engaging, and will meet at many ability levels the needs of my students.
My Project
This requested Toon into Comics Genre Study Deluxe Set allows the books to be used many ways. There are four sets of guided reading kits containing six or fifteen books, and lesson plans and activity sheets to accompany them. These texts may also be used for close reading. They are leveled texts, which will allow me to target student needs and reading levels.
Along with the guided reading sets, this set includes thirty individual hardback books I can place in my classroom library. There are also lesson plans for these texts in the set.
I plan to use the individual texts to extend learning after guided reading lessons have lessons been taught as well as allow students to read them for pleasure.
This book set will allow me to differentiate instruction using text that provide students access to genre in a unique format.
The variety of texts and titles will provide my students with many opportunities to learn about the genres using books on their reading levels. These books are engaging, interesting, and will appeal to both reluctant readers and those students who already love to read!
