Readers Need a Variety of Independent Reading Books
My students need leveled independent reading materials and would benefit from more nonfiction titles. Our goal is to increase students fluency and reading confidence.
Improving reading skills by reading at home every night is not an option for some of our students. We are encouraging independent reading as a school-wide initiative but are struggling to ensure reading is occurring at home. We hope to find more books and offer more opportunities to read at school.
Our students range from Pre-Kindergarten to 5th grade.
The majority of our students come from homes and families that are struggling to find employment and need the assistance of government services in order to find housing and purchase groceries. Though our students are faced with countless hardships at home they seem to always come to school with energy and eagerness to have someone reach out and help them learn. All of our students desire the attention from our staff of teachers to show them how to become stronger learners. Our students do have a difficult time with continuing to learn and read in their homes at night. We are hoping to create a learning environment here that gives them a comfortable and supportive place to read. Our students want to read books that they enjoy. They often describe how they love to read but want to have a chance to read the books that they can select on their own. We want to give them that chance and encourage this love of learning.
My Project
All students are provided with 30 minutes of independent reading time each day. We encourage them to read 15 minutes at home as well. When they are here at school they are asked to select the reading material they prefer as long as the material is at their independent reading level. We have selected more books that excite the students but also match their reading level. Many of the selections support the needs of our struggling readers and hopefully many of the selections will entice our group of male readers who continue to struggle with motivation to read. We will use these books to broaden our selection of independent reading materials in every classroom.
Our students need as many opportunities to improve their independent reading skills.
They need every opportunity to have time to enjoy reading and make connections to books. The number one way to increase fluency and independence is to spend as much time as possible reading material that is on their independent reading level. Our students love to learn and love to read! We want to support that love of learning and put more books in their hands. Please help us support their love of learning!!
