Readers Make Leaders: Picture Books to Engage Older Learners

My students need a variety of engaging picture books so we can start our day off right, READING! Readers make leaders and with books like "The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors" they will have fun reading.

My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, I see that my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, they show up to school every day with a smile on their faces ready to learn so they can grow up to be successful citizens of tomorrow.

My students are creative, clever and very curious about the world around them.

They like to move, they love to read, and they love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single-parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on developing a classroom climate of love and respect so they want to come to school and enjoy learning while they are here. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hoping to inspire our learners to continue on a path of academic excellence throughout their lives.

My Project

These books are more than just stories. I will use books like, "How Full is Your Bucket?" to teach about kindness and the importance of spreading kindness where ever my students go.

The books will be used in three different fifth grade classrooms during our morning meeting time so that we start the day off reading as well as learning about growth mindset, kindness, inclusiveness, and how to be a good person.

Many of my students do not have the privilege of having someone read to them at home. I would like that to change this year. Every child deserves to have a story read to them at least once a day. With my new initiative of A Picture Book A Day, and your help these students will have something that can never be erased. They will know that they are important, loved, and they all can learn.
