Readers Bloom in Cozy Corners

Help me give my students in my special education ELAR classroom a cozy, inclusive reading corner with soft rugs, bookshelves, diverse books, and reading supports to create a calming space that inspires focus, inclusion, and love for reading.

My Project

I teach an incredible group of 6th–8th grade special education students in a modified ELAR classroom. Many of my students come to me with reading challenges, learning differences, and a deep desire to feel safe, seen, and successful. They are funny, curious, wiggly, kind, and full of potential. What they need most is a calm, welcoming space where reading feels exciting instead of intimidating.I want to transform a corner of my classroom into a cozy, inclusive reading nook, a place where students can relax, explore stories, and discover the magic of books in a space that feels like home.

To make this happen, I am asking for:

Cozy area rugs to define a calming reading space

Low wall-mounted shelves to display books face-forward and spark student interest

Diverse, empathy-building books that reflect different cultures, abilities, families, and perspectives

Fidget bands and chair cushions to support my little wiggle-worms and desk drummers

Comfortable floor seating options to help reluctant readers settle in and stay engaged

Sensory pillows to keep them engaged in reading circles

These materials will help my students engage with reading in ways that fit their bodies, their minds, and their needs.

Why This Matters

Many of my students have not yet experienced reading as joyful. Some struggle academically, some have difficulty focusing, and some have rarely seen books that reflect who they are or introduce them to the world beyond their own experiences.

A safe, sensory-friendly reading environment, paired with thoughtful, empathy-provoking literature, can transform the way they see themselves, their classmates, and others.
