My Students
My students love books! By offering them an opportunity to interact with series books, students will not only grow as readers, but as thinkers, too.
Our school is in a rural community, in South Carolina, where tradition is thick and families depend on one another.
We are a Title 1 school. Ninety-two percent of our students are on free or reduced lunch plans. Students in our school are considered at risk of failure and live at or near poverty level. I have students from many different races, religions, and academic levels. Their interests are just as diverse!
My students are full of personality and are just beginning to discover that they can make a difference in their world. However, many of my students struggle to think critically and express their thoughts in a way that makes sense. Interacting with series books will help these young readers to think about characters and plots and grow their confidence in communicating about them.
My Project
In the early grades, young readers spend so much time phonetically decoding words, they often miss out on the plot and character development that makes reading enjoyable. In an attempt to create a culture of reading among our primary grades, we are encouraging students to read books from a series. By reading books in a series, readers deepen their connection with book characters and the pattern of text structure the author uses. They also become familiar with the author's use of vocabulary, and as a result, they read more fluently and their confidence grows. Because they like the familiar, they can't wait to read the next one and the next one and the next one! It's so fun to watch!
I love it when students aren't talking about the TV shows they are watching, but are talking about the books they are reading!
