Readers Become Thinkers

My students need Guided Reading Levels B-F Nonfiction book sets.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Wolfe's classroom raised $445

My Students

My students love science and technology. By offering them a bigger selection of nonfiction books, students will not only grow as readers, but as thinkers, too.

Our school is in a rural community, in South Carolina, where tradition is thick and families depend on one another.

We are a Title I school which means that over 40% of our students are on free or reduced lunch plans. Students in our school are considered at risk of failure and live at or near poverty level. I have students from many different races, religions, and academic levels. Their interests are just as diverse! My students are full of personality and are just beginning to discover that they can make a difference in their world. However, many of my students do not read fluently and we are in need of resources to help them achieve greater success.

My Project

Our lower level readers love science and technology just as much as our higher level readers do. My students who struggle with reading need non-fiction books they can read independently. I'm requesting Guided Reading Levels B-F Nonfiction book sets.

If a book is too hard, the reader becomes frustrated and discouraged.

If it is too easy, it becomes boring. It is important for students to have books they can read without support. This will grow their fluency and word recognition skills which will in turn build their comprehension skills. Comprehension is the beginning of thinking. Thinking is critical to learning. With a better selection of non-fiction books at a level students can read independently, I believe we will grow better readers AND better thinkers!
