Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at what is called a school of choice. We provide an alternative to the traditional high school setting. We cater to students whose circumstances require flexible hours, personalized instruction, immense emotional support, and a small-campus setting that allows us to meet them exactly where they are.
Our students realize the importance of graduation, and they come to us with that goal in mind.
They are a diverse group of learners, and each brings a unique set of talents and circumstances.
My Project
When we give our students choices in their reading, we also provide them with ownership of their learning and empower them to make that learning meaningful and relevant. Book clubs and literature circle discussions are one way to accomplish this.
I want ALL students to have access to books written by authors who look like them and about characters who look like them.
Those discussions and that representation truly matter. When students are genuinely engaged in their reading, the discussions that follow are insightful and often awe-inspiring. I love listening to students talk about reading things that they genuinely care about. Book clubs are also often a jumping-off point for reluctant readers, and many go on to read books by their chosen author independently.
Some of my students have never read a book before walking into my high school classroom. Never. Book clubs are a way for me to ease them into a world I love: the world of reading. I want to make sure they each leave my classroom with a book in hand, planning what they're going to read next.
These book choices will widen our diverse book club selections and give more students a voice in their choice.
