My students are eager learners who love to be entertained and have fun while learning.

Although eager to learn, many of my students lack the resources they need to be successful readers. Our school is in a rural area, and for some, the school library is their only access to books. Often the only reading my students do is at school due to not having books at home.

My Project

My students will be reading the books Number the Stars and Scumble in literature circles. By reading Number the Stars, students will be learning about World War II and the experience of a girl their age during this time in Sweden. For most, it will be their first exposure to the Holocaust through realistic fiction. This books tackles this grim subject matter in an age appropriate way for students. They will also be reading Scumble in literature circles. This is a fantasy book that is a sequel to a book they've already read, Savvy about siblings in their early teens who receive a magical power. This book exposes them to advanced vocabulary that they use context clues to decipher. We also use this book to prompt narrative writing where students can imagine having a magical power of their own. My students have been asking me to get this book for them ever since they read the first book in the series.

Your donation will help improve the literacy instruction of my students by providing content and literacy instruction in an engaging way.

My students will become better readers by participating in literature circles and engaging in the discussions, content study, vocabulary study and writing activities that will accompany these novels. Please give my students an opportunity to read books my school library, their only access to books, does not have on hand.
