My Students

Roald Dahl said, "If you are going to get anywhere in life you have to read a lot of books."

If there is one thing my students love it is books, and in our school we teach that Readers Are Leaders.

As an elementary librarian, it is my job to foster that love, encouraging students to explore new genres as they grow as readers and leaders. One way this is accomplished is by spotlighting an author of the month. Students enjoy the author bios and the different stories each author has created. They also love to "Go Fish" for a book. I have four fishbowls representing fiction, nonfiction, picture books, and easy nonfiction. The students catch a fish and then use the information on their fish to locate the book in the library. This helps them identify different genres, learn to find books using the Dewey decimal system, and most importantly it gets them excited about reading.

Unfortunately, when schools closed during the COVID-19 pandemic, lots of books were not returned to the library and remain missing. I would love to replace those lost books and add a few toys to bring the stories to life.

My Project

The books and toys I selected support our Author of the Month program, which has become a favorite feature in our library. This is a program that works in school and at home. When schools closed because of COVID-19, students were still able to enjoy the library through our website. They had access to the Author of the Month spotlight, book reviews and recommendations, along with a weekly joke to keep a smile on their faces.

Quality literature and plush characters from their favorite stories keeps kids smiling when life gets hard.
