Readers are Leaders! -- (Los Lectores Son Líderes!)

My students need children's stories in Spanish, as over 300 of them are English-as-a-Second-Language students, and also need exposure to the great classics in children's literature.

My Students

"The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go," wrote the great Dr. Seuss in "I Can Read with My Eyes Shut!" Students who visit our school library love to read! But, we need more library books to match our student population numbers.

We have 1,300 public elementary school library students within PreK through 4th Grade and are the largest elementary school in the state of Alabama!

Our children come from working class homes and from a variety of cultural backgrounds, specifically African-American, Caucasian, and Hispanic. Our Hispanic population contains families where, sometimes, the students have to translate for their parents. Many of our students come from high-poverty families. Often times they do not have books and other print resources in their homes. My students love to read, visit the library, and check out new books. They take pride in selecting their own books to read and are always wanting to know when new books will arrive in the library.

My Project

Our students are hungry for books! Our student population has exploded in recent years to 1,300 students. We are the largest elementary school in Alabama! We need more books to meet the demand from our massive student population. Books will excite and motivate our students to become better readers and will continue to develop a love of reading in our students.

We have over 300 English-as-a-Second Language students who need books in their home language of Spanish so that, while they are learning the English language, they can also preserve their first language and take these Spanish books home and read them with their families and parents, many of whom only speak Spanish.

They need access to current print materials that they may not have in their homes. Students will continue to learn to take ownership and pride in their school library, with learning how to take care of the books available so other students can access them.

If you donate to this project, you will be participating in the reading development of our children; we thank you in advance!

These books will take our students to places they have never been and, maybe, will never go. These books will introduce characters whose storyline might resonate with a student and stay with them for a lifetime. Above all, these books will keep our students walking down the positive path of reading!
