My Project

My students are an eager group of second grade readers in Saint Clair Shores, MI. Our school serves a diverse population, and many of our students come from low-income households where they may have a limited amount of high-interest reading materials available at home. Additionally many students do not view themselves as readers or value the importance of reading. Throughout the year my students become incredibly excited about reading and find my classroom to be a comfort zone to take risks with books. The dream is for my students to find that joy of reading and to view themselves as a reader. After all "Reading can take you places you have never been before". (Dr. Seuss)

I am requesting 8 flexible floor seats and additional series books to enhance the comfort, joy, and confidence within my classroom.

Each year I motivate around 60 second graders to go from learning how to read to reading for enjoyment and knowledge! Currently, I am limited with our flexible seating options for the number of students that I have in the classroom. I would love to create a cozy learning environment, allowing all students to be more engaged and focused on their reading.

Additionally, I would like to increase the variety of series books for independent reading time. These series build off of the shared reading books that my students come to love. By having additional titles from the series students can further learn about characters, compare and contrast events within the series, and deepen their understanding of a topic. Reading takes off when students love what they are reading!

I anticipate that the new flexible seating options and high-interest series books will provide comfort and boost my students' reading confidence to become leaders within their classroom and community.
