This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are eager to acquire knowledge! We work hard to establish a collaborative atmosphere that allows kids to support one another, take chances without being afraid of making mistakes, and push themselves to the next level.
We are a large, urban population that reflects Chicago's vast diversity; At home, more than 80 different language and dialects are spoken!
Most students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Many class members live in communities that are racially, culturally and economically segregated throughout the city. Their time at our diverse school offers each an opportunity to learn about and from one another. We have to make this a positive opportunity and one
My Project
The 40 Book Challenge is one of the most exciting and revitalizing goals. Last year I implemented the 40 Book challenge for the first time mid year and changed it to 20 Book Challenge. My goal is to begin it right away and Readers and Writing Notebooks would help in keeping the kids organized, support them in writing about reading, help them reflect, encourage them to share ideas, and assist them in setting personal goals. Last year, I created our own "Readers Notebooks." We used post its, lots of glue sticks, and regular composition books. It was a great idea, but creating the notebook was time consuming and an inefficient use of our precious time.
These official Notebooks, are the "real deal" and more motivational and engaging.
They are "specially designed to promote reflection and dialogue about reading." The organized, color tabbed notebook is a place to record thoughts and feeling about reading. It promotes dialogue and collaboration. It provides a space for students to develop writing and catalog ideas.
The notebook is an authentic way to assess student needs. It will help us begin dialogues, understand their interests, and strengths. I can gather information that will help me target areas for growth both in reading and writing.
These Readers and Writing Notebooks are a terrific tool that will inspire and engage. Help us meet our 40 Book Challenge and be part of our success!
