Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Superheroes make mistakes, but never give up. They try their best to do their work and help others every day," is a motto, that my second-graders created and live by daily.
My students really are, in a word: super.
My second grade students are superheroes, and there couldn't be a more perfect name for this dynamic bunch. Within this group, you'll find every type of hero. There's the questioner with the power to inquire about anything and everything; the informer, who uses life experiences and book knowledge to keep us in the know; the reinforcer, who reminds us of content knowledge and connects it to the real world; the dreamer, who tell us about the endless possibilities; the captain, who keeps the class motivated and at times, in line; and a host of others, making them the most powerful team around.
My Project
Once upon a time, students received reading instruction in the classroom. Teachers delivered instruction individually, in small groups, and whole class. Students happily sat with books and read them with support from the teacher. It was a magical time.
Then one day, a Big Bad Wolf, known as Covid 19, came and threatened the students and teacher's livelihood, and the only thing that could stop it was tools for remote learning...
A subscription to Guided Readers is the resource needed to support students during remote learning.
My students struggle in various ways while reading, and this program will serve as a much needed support. Most of my students with special needs are classified as speech and language; therefore, the ability to listen to stories, as well as record and play themselves back will not only allow them to grow as readers, but will also support them in their language acquisition.
For students who struggle with processing, there are reading and writing comprehension activities. There are also activities for decoding and fluency which supports students who struggle with their working memory and need repetition of sounds and sight words in order to retain them.
This program really has something to offer everyone! And best of all, I will be able to track students' progress throughout and adapt instruction accordingly.
