Help me give my students novels to read before the actual author, Mindy McGinnis, comes to speak.

My Students
My sophomores are typical teenagers from a small rural town in Northeast Ohio. Many of them live on farms and take care of livestock. They were all very welcoming to this new-to-the-district teacher and offered a helping hand when I needed it.
My students set ambitious goals for this year.
One of which includes reading a book a month. A majority of the students in their year's class have expressed their reading motivation is mostly extrinsic rather than intrinsic. Hearing from an author in real life might be the experience they need to change their view of reading. To make reading joyful once again.
My Project
Have you ever fallen in love with a band simply because you saw them perform live? Seeing an artist in real life makes you appreciate their art more. Meeting the artist makes you fall in love with their talent. This is what I want to bring to my students.
Meeting an author and being able to have a conversation about their work adds new appreciation to their writing and the act of reading.
When I met author Mindy McGinnis at a local bookstore I had actually never read her books. She shared her writing process with the small audience and I immediately knew she needed to come share this with my students. We spoke afterward exchanging emails and I purchased one of her novels.
About 25 pages into A Madness So Discreet, I sent her an email asking about the story and she actually emailed me back! This exchange of conversation about a printed novel in my hand with the actual author deepened my knowledge of the story. This is the experience I want my students to have.
I would like to have my students read Mindy's books in a book club-style before she visits our classroom. I will allow them to choose which book they want to read and groups will meet to discuss the books while diving deep into the author's craft. Then students will have an opportunity to actually discuss this craft with the real-life author. Mindy will join our class for the day to talk with students about the books and she will share her best writing techniques.
