“The role of parents in the education of their children cannot be overestimated.” –Unknown Hello, we are Title 1 Reading Specialists in Pennsylvania. This year we underwent a significant change from a K-3 to a K-6 building. With all of the new students and building changes, it has been a challenge for both students and teachers to adjust. Our district has a high poverty population, meaning that our students are at risk of not having adequate educational support at home. Our students do not always have the means or opportunities to flourish as readers and thinkers. Our goal is to increase parental involvement by providing books, support, resources, and opportunities to our students along with their parents/guardians in grades 1-6. We have started a program called “Read with Me” where parents/guardians along with their child meet with the principal and Title 1 teachers where we encourage reading aloud, storytelling, and writing as a regular part of a daily family routine. “Read with Me” also helps parents/guardians to understand their role in fostering literacy skills and interests in their children, strengthen the bond between parents and children through enjoyable literacy-related interactions, and to increase parental involvement in the schools and in their children’s education. In order for our program to be successful, we need new, appealing books for each participating family. Our goal is to start them off with books guaranteed to captivate children and delight their parents, also. These books will then help to build a family library and encourage students and parents/guardians to become life-long readers. Our students need new, high-quality books that will engage them in reading. Please help us to help our students! Thanks!
