This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Remember having your favorite story read to you as a child. The smile on your face when you heard the tone of the reader change to show excitement, fear or sorrow. Listening to a story allows all readers the opportunity to imagine the words on the page coming to life and discuss them.
My students are an enthusiastic, driven group of kindergartners that come into the day ready to learn.
They look forward to the literature that is read aloud to them daily, enjoy the time they have to pick their own book to read, and are excited about listening to stories in our listening center.
They are made up of mostly English Language Learners that learn best by a lot of hands-on, engaging activities that allow them to practice concepts in multiple ways. Our school is a K-5 Title school that is implementing balanced literacy with Reader's and Writer's Workshops, Daily Five and Cafe. We are dedicated to ensure every child succeeds and look forward to seeing each student grow as a reader, writer, and learner.
My Project
Every morning my students come in and place their picture next to a Daily Five activity card: read to self, partner read, work on writing, word work or listening center. Unfortunately, the listening center picture card cannot be used most days because we are running out of books with a matching CD.
With the books and Cd's, my students would have the opportunity to listen, share and write about a different book every week. Our listening center would have a variety of books that would introduce new authors, genres, and ways to enjoy books. The students would get to discuss each book they listened to together and write about what they enjoyed.
Providing students with a variety of ways to read a book allows all readers, whether they can read the words or just the pictures, an opportunity to be successful.
Listening to books on tape allows readers and non readers the same chance to enjoy a book, practice reading strategies, and discuss the elements of a story. These read-along books and Cd's would really make a difference to my students because they love listening center and these new books would give them a new story every week!
