In an attempt to meet CCSS, students are taught reading skills through our online curriculum in class. The curriculum is supplemented with novel sets, where I try to engage my students in higher-level, critical thinking skills through discussions, collaborative reasoning, and writing about reading. The students use these skills for book club discussions or while reading their independent novels. Furthermore, students are expected to meet personal goals in accelerated reading, so they are expected to read often at school and at home.
I want to put interesting books in their hands so they can get excited about reading.
Many of the novels I have chosen are newer releases with bright, updated covers that will catch their eyes. After teaching for 32 years, the most rewarding phrase is, "I loved that book, but what should I read next?" Many of my classroom library books are outdated or in poor shape. Getting new books allows me to keep my students hooked on an author or series while fostering a love for reading.
My students' reading levels and interests cover a wide range. Due to limited funds, teachers do not receive assistance purchasing novels for their classrooms. This DonorsChoose project will allow me to obtain books for my students of varied needs and levels.
