Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students have been in school for 2 months. Even though some attended school virtually last year, for the most part all have adjusted well. I have students performing on different grade levels but they are determined and work hard daily. They come from diverse backgrounds with different challenges. They come to school for a sense of normalcy.
My students have adapted beautifully to the "new normal" this school year.
They love coming to school to learn, share and have fun. I love seeing them help one another out. They have adapted in doing so safely.
My Project
My students struggle to read independently using our current reading program. It bothers me to see them struggle and lose confidence in themselves. I want to spark an interest in reading for them. I want to build up their confidence and raise their self esteem when it comes to reading. The reading kits I ordered will be used for supplemental purposes. The material will allow me to differentiate to meet their needs on their level.
"To learn to read is to light a fire" and I want to keep the fire burning to give them the passion to want to read.
My students are noticeably more engaged when they are able to understand what the lesson is about. They participate and have a sense of pride in their effort. When I witness their enthusiasm for learning it makes me very happy. I know that the the reading units, pencil sharpener, as well as the crayons will help my students be more prepared for the day. Who wants to write with a dull pencil or not have crayons to add the finishing touches to their drawing? The zip lock bags will be used to store important papers.
Frederick Douglass wrote, "Once you learn to read, you will be forever free." I want to give my students the gift of becoming better readers which will give them the freedom to go wherever their little minds will take them.
