My second grade class of twenty-one students arrives each day between 7:20 and 8:10. Most of them love order, have perfectionist tendencies and are many times unwilling to take risks. The students are comprised of middle to low income and all receive free breakfast and lunch at school. All students have backpacks but may lack the daily supplies for success. Our school is located in Montgomery, Alabama, which is the capital city.
I am always striving to build a sense of community within the classroom and provide opportunities to succeed for all students.
Some of the projects I am looking for this year deal with cooperative play, understanding / embracing culture and diversity, creative writing, and reading.
My Project
During reading block, I meet with small groups to work on phonics and fluency in reading. Students working independently complete tasks and select books. These sturdy boxes will help us organize our books and I can provide individual boxes for each student's level.
The additional books will provide more book variety within the classroom, and increase excitement within the reading block.
Students love reading new books in small groups and individually. These new books encompass various genres and allow students to be exposed to many types of literature. Children love great stories and these new books will bring smiles to everyone's faces!
Nearly all students from low‑income households
