My Students
Our middle school students are from urban, rural, and suburban areas. We have a new after-school reading program this year to help developing and struggling readers. Local college students come in and help assist and tutor our students. Even with these mentors, our students still struggle to stay focused on reading independently and in partners. Students seem to be encouraged more with small incentives and rewards. We hope that each student will become a life-long reader. The incentives in this project will give students the boost they need to put in that extra effort.
My Project
The Super Duper Treasure Chest of Motivational Toys and Prizes, the Smencils, Trend stickers, and Bic lead pencils will help motivate our students to participate in our after-school reading program. Students will be able to get a prize for completing activities at our reading stations. College tutors will also be facilitating reading games and activities in which students can get prizes. Many of our students struggle just to bring a simple pencil to class. Just having a Dixon golf pencil or Bic Sparkle mechanical pencil will be pretty exciting for our kids.
Life-long readers know that the best reward is finding a book you love.
We hope to share this experience with students. However, some need a small push to get them decoding, rereading, retelling, predicting and the other skills we as readers do. These scented Trend and Eureka stickers and other prizes will help keep our students engaged and working hard after a long school day.
