My students need high interest books like The Clique Collection, graphic novels like Emiko Superstar, as well as magazines like Time for Kids and Junior Scholastic.
I start my class with a daily dose of independent reading. This is how I exemplify the importance of reading as part of a person's daily routine. It is my goal that my students become more active, engaging readers at the end of the year, and I hope to get them there with the help of generous donors.
I teach at a Title I school in which teaching reading is a challenge.
Although a good number of my students enjoy reading, most of them find it to be a taxing chore that they want to avoid at all cost. I am faced with a battle against struggling readers and reluctant readers, and this is something I want to correct. I want to see my students grow into passionate, compulsive readers. I know I can be an instrument in changing their negative attitude about reading if I give them various options of reading materials, materials that address not only their reading needs but also their interests and motivation. My students will surely appreciate a wider array of reading selections.
My Project
My students need high interest books, as well as magazines like Time for Kids and Junior Scholastic. With the reading materials I am requesting, I am positive that my students will be motivated to read more and more not because they are required to do it, but because they have cultivated the passion for reading. My students will appreciate their time spent on independent reading; they will become more excited talking about books, and they will have fun writing book reports and book talks!
I envision my students to become leaders in the future, and that will happen I know.
By cultivating their passion for reading now, I am laying the foundation for their future. They will succeed because they read!
