Success For All is what we want! Our school's research-based reading curriculum is called Success for All. The kindergarten program is full of rich language experiences through quality literature and direct phonics instruction. First grade continues this and in addition, students complete online activities to practice their reading skills with a partner. This part of the curriculum is called "learning to read'. "Reading to learn" is what happens next.
I would like to expand our number of quality literature titles used to teach students important reading strategies and skills.
Each requested title helps students practice clarifying, predicting, questioning, and summarizing strategies. In addition, each individual book title focuses on specific reading skills such as compare and contrast, cause and effect, story structure, literary techniques, and author's purpose.
I chose The Llama Who Had No Pajama by Mary Ann Hoberman (2nd grade level), and A Poke in the I by Paul B. Janeczko (3rd grade level) because they are both poetry books that focus on figurative language to help readers understand what authors are trying to say. Barbed Wire Baseball by Marissa Moss (3rd grade level) is a literary nonfiction book that will help students understand characterization by looking at the main character's thoughts, feelings, words, and actions. Additionally, these books are illustrated in thought provoking and interesting ways to help students enjoy their reading experience even more.
