My scholars are a creative and innovative group. My goal is to help them realize their potential by cultivating academic excellence and recognizing their individual strengths. While there have been many new challenges this school year as we navigate new ways of learning since the COVID-19 pandemic, my scholars are meeting these challenges with resilience, flexibility, and perseverance.
We are always considering ways to make our small-group reading instruction more approachable, relevant, culturally diverse, and fun.
With this in mind, we've selected two Newberry Award winning/ Newberry Honor novels to read in small groups. These books will be relevant and engaging to my scholars.
The first, The Crossover, by Kwame Alexander, is a story of growing up and teenage life, told in verse. My scholars have read other books by Kwame Alexander and I know this will be one that they can relate to, engage in, and learn from.
The second, Pictures of Hollis Woods, by Patricia Reilly Giff, is a story of a girl growing up in foster care who faces a hard choice when she realizes her guardian is no longer able to take care of her. It can be hard to find books with representation of foster families, but this is one that does it well and stays with you long after you read it.
I know both of these books will be huge hits for scholars. They will be great additions to our small-group reading groups.
