My scholars are a creative and innovative group. My goal is to help them realize their potential by cultivating academic excellence and recognizing their individual strengths. While there have been many new challenges this school year as we navigate new ways of learning since the COVID-19 pandemic, my scholars are meeting these challenges with resilience, flexibility, and perseverance.
We are always considering ways to make our small-group reading instruction more approachable, relevant, culturally diverse, and fun.
With this in mind, we've selected two Newberry Award winning novels to read in small groups. These books will be relevant and engaging to my scholars.
The first, Al Capone Does My Shirts, is about a teen who moves to Alcatraz Island because of a parent working at the famous prison, and deals with the social, cultural, and familial challenges that are raised by having a parent work in such a high-profile job.
The second, Inside Out and Back Again, is about a girl who moves to the United States, and then to several places within the country, from Viet Nam, while working to learn a new culture and language and still preserve her Vietnamese culture, language, and familial customs.
I know both of these books will be huge hits for scholars. They will be great additions to our small-group reading groups.
