My students need a listening center consisting of headphones, a headphone splitter, and a listening center rack to help them enjoy literature and improve fundamental reading skills.
My school has around 600 students. We are one of the largest schools in our county, but do not receive federal funding (Title I). Even though we have a very large number of students from low income households (more than other entire schools in our area), the percentage does not meet the requirements for the funding. Therefore, we rely on funds from our PTO, our community, and money out of our own pockets.
Regardless of their differences, all students come together and learn in our special little classroom family.
My classroom is made up of students from a variety of backgrounds and ability levels. Some qualify for special education services in a resource room, while others are considered academically gifted. Some are raised in traditional families, while others are being raised by grandparents, other relatives, or foster families. Access to books at home varies as well. Some students have parents who read to them often, while others do not even see a book outside of the classroom.
My Project
Listening to someone read is a key component of the Daily Five program that we use as part of our literacy program.
Research has proven that there is a correlation between children listening to stories and their reading achievement.
Some of my students are lacking these experiences in their daily lives outside of school. This listening center would allow me to provide the opportunity for multiple students to listen to a story at the same time during our daily five choice time each day.
I am requesting headphone splitters, so that I can have a group of students all hooked in to an iPad or computer at the same time listening to the story. I am also requesting 10 sets of headphones to hook in to the splitters, for the individual students. Additionally, I am requesting a listening center rack to provide an organized area to keep the items stored. This listening center will provide additional opportunities for my students to develop a love of literature, listening to stories while I work with a small group! Please help me provide this valuable experience to my students!
