This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember when students sat around old fashioned brown tape recorders, used large blue and white foam headphones, and pushed clumsy buttons when recording their readings? Well, it is now time to move into the 21st Century using 21st Century technology with just a touch of the screen!
We are a Program Improvement School located in the state of California.
Our school's Learning Resource Center currently serves 50 students in grades K-5 who have been or are in the process of being diagnosed with learning disabilities or at risk for failing in school.
These students are receiving Tier 3 Response to Intervention/Instruction in the hopes of closing the achievement gap with their general education peers. Most of these students have scored far below basic on the CST (State Test. They have been unsuccessful with traditional methods of teaching and have lacked growth towards their academic achievement due to their varied learning styles. Students are taught using small group and whole group instruction targeting skill deficits in order to increase understanding of grade level curriculum. Many of these students have multiple learning disabilities which often interfere with the way they process information.
My Project
It has been proven that the use of technology in the classroom can improve access to the general education curriculum for students with disabilities and those who are at risk for failing in school. The use of technology can assist in removing barriers for these students and improve the ability of teachers to address students diversity and specific needs.
In moving toward the 21st Century, the goal of the Learning Resource Center was to place new age technology in the hands of the students. We have done this by purchasing 10 iPad 2's for our students through a grant program. The district has provided standards-based research computer programs for low performing and students with disabilities to access reading programs.
One goal of the program is to increase student decoding, fluency, and comprehension. Students will be able to use the headsets to record and listen to their readings while keeping them safe from damage by placing them in the covers for safe keeping when not in use.
This project is important to help close both the achievement gap and technological divide for students with disabilities and those at risk for failing in school.
The headsets are an integral part of improving student decoding, fluency, and comprehension using district purchased standards-based research programs. Your donation will help improve student outcomes in all areas of the curriculum by giving them alternate ways of learning to read while reading to learn.
