Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In this time of work and worry about the economy, in the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, "It is a happy talent to know how to play." I am requesting some playful books for my youngest students to enjoy as they work toward reaching the goal of being an accomplished reader.
Our students are very special in that they are extremely gifted, smart, and eager to learn, but they have very limited access to books and count on the school library to supply them.
Ninety percent of our students are on the free and reduced lunch program and although their parents do not have extra money, they strive to provide them with a sound and caring family life and trust that our school will provide them with the tools they need to succeed. We have volunteer after school art and science clubs where our students are showing insight and intelligence in the projects they create. Our teachers are dedicated to these children and spend hours encouraging and motivating them to read. Research has shown that when children have access to many books, they are more successful. Our young readers have read all of our lower level books and would be appreciative of new ones.
My Project
Whenever I read a book to children about cats, dogs, or other pets, hands shoot up in the air to share their text-to-text connections. Research supports that children can increase their reading comprehension when they make connections in their schema to new learning. Most children have "pets" in their schema so I wanted to give them a new set of books about pets. Children will relate to the books I have selected in a very positive way.
The public library near our school was closed due to funding issues last year.
The closest public library is too far to walk to from our neighborhood where most of our parents only own one car. Most of our students' parents walk to the school with their students. Working two jobs is a situation many of our students' parents experience, working at night as well as the day. It is difficult to find a time when students can go to the public library so the school library is key to their success.
