This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is in a low income area where 99% of the school receives free or reduced-price lunch. There are approximately 800 students from Pre-K to 4th grade with 75% of them as English as their second language. The students come from backgrounds where money is not readily available and they depend on the school for survival. Most of the kids only get a meal when they come to school.
I have students who are on different medication in order to keep them calm.
With the Texas STAAR exam, the students are sitting in their seats for long periods of time. They are trying to prepare for test and they have a hard time focusing.
Our teachers are standing for long periods of time of the day teaching and have a jam packed schedule with a 30 minute lunch and minimal restroom breaks. They have to plan three days out of the week together in order to all be on one accord. There is a good relationship with each teacher, which produces awesome teamwork.
My Project
The reading corner nook will help our school's library feel comfy and relaxing when the students come in to check a book out and read. The students have been through so much in the past couple of weeks, that seeing an inviting reading nook will help motivate them to grab a book, relax, and read. Also, the wobble chairs helps to keep those students who have to constantly move, have an excuse to move. As the students work on projects at the computers or tables, they can wobble in the wobble chairs to help keep them relaxed and focused as they work.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
