My Students

What? I don't know that word! I don't know what it means! This is what my students face each day while attending school. Do you remember learning to read? Try learning to read an entirely different language.

My students face a major challenge each day at school.

They are all ESL students, so they have a language barrier when it comes to learning. I see them for 2 hours each day to improve their language skills and understanding. They want to learn, but have a difficult time due to English not being their first language. They have all improved a great deal since moving to the United States, but we have a long way to go. These students attend a low-income public school, and they are trying to fit in.

My Project

I am requesting different novels and readers to encourage my students to love reading. If we were able to have these books they could practice fluency and comprehension at home. These extra books will help the students become more independent when it comes to reading. These books will improve my ESL students comprehension, language skills, and self esteem. If I can get my students to learn that it is okay to make a mistake, they would be more willing to try to pronounce the words in front of their peers. You will be giving them high interest reading material that will allow them to read without becoming embarrassed. You will also be encouraging these students to keep trying. These students are wonderful and they just need a little extra help.

My ESL students are required to read and perform at grade level even though they are lacking the English language skills.

You will be making a huge difference in their lives. You will be giving them the materials to learn the skills to read and improve their reading levels and confidence.
