A good book can change a child's life. I teach fifth grade in a high need community. My students range from those receiving special education services to those who have been identified as gifted. Many of my students are in foster care or are in family situations that provide little stability.
We have no books to read! We are a newly developed public school so we have no literacy closet. There are no novels provided for my students to read. They only are exposed to short stories, or exerts of novels in their reading text books. Students are showing great interest when I read aloud a novel in class, so a novel that we could read together and do a book study on could improve their attitude towards reading.
I need 35 books so that each child in my class can read their own copy. This would provide the opportunity to read together and to read independently a story that exemplifies plot and character building. It is a good example of high quality literature and is high interest at the same time
With your help students in my class will get the chance to escape into a world where a child their age is making the decisions. They will get to live through the character and become empowered doing so.
