This project is fully funded

I teach 2nd grade at a small school in southern Indiana. I am constantly trying to make our subject matter more exciting for the students. In 2nd grade the students are beginning to read chapter books. I want to use their excitement about reading chapter books and hook them on a book series.

As a teacher I want to encourage independent reading as much as possible. One way I can do this is by introducing the students to the first book in a book series. I am asking for 2 class sets of different series. We will read these books together as an introduction into the series.

My hope is that these series will hook the students and they will independently read the next books in the series. It is important for the students to enjoy what they are reading in order to create lifelong readers.

At my school we use a program called Accelerated Reader. This program monitors student’s independent reading. I am able to set goals for the students that they can reach. This program encourages reading for reward and I want to encourage reading for enjoyment. With the introduction into the series the students can enjoy reading while working toward a goal.
