Help me give my students the Lakeshore Guided Reading book set along with other books. Small group reading instruction allows for differentiated instruction based on their needs. Learning to read in a supportive environment fosters their love of reading!

My Project
The heart and soul of our first grade class is their relationship to books. When I put a new book I bought for them in the meeting area, the kids find it right away and start pouring over it. After reading aloud The Gingerbread Man recently, the classroom was filled with the refrain “Run, run as fast as you can, you can’t catch me, I’m the Gingerbread Man,” as children went about their day.
No matter what technological advances come our way, I can still hold my students spellbound with a good story.
They crowd close, sometimes unable to stop themselves from calling out with comments and questions. Since the first day of school I have encouraged the students to head to the carpet when they finish an activity and look through the book baskets. They lay on the carpet devouring the pictures and looking for familiar words. Children who read for pleasure and information become lifelong learners.
So how do I continue to foster a love of reading in my children? I must surround them with lots of books they can read independently and books that will stretch their burgeoning reading skills as they work in groups based on their reading levels. By adding books to our library that they can read independently, I aim to build stronger readers. The more they read, the better readers they become. But it is not enough to teach students to read. They need books they want to read. It’s thrilling to hear students rereading familiar refrains and using their voices to bring characters to life. It’s not hard to get our first graders excited about reading. As we move into a new year, we need new books to challenge and engage them.
