My Students

Upon entering my classroom you'd be welcomed by a huge banner that reads "Light up your imagination...Read!" It is something I tell my students everyday. Reading unlocked my imagination. It allowed me to explore and question the world and it is what I hope my students can discover.

My students are a group of curious fourth graders that love school and reading.

The majority are designated English Language Learners, learning disabled, or both. However, they walk into my classroom every morning excited to discover new ideas and proof how capable and smart they truly are.

My Project

With the new Common Core State Standards, students are to work with nonfiction text, which is traditionally harder for them to understand due to spelling and content. Unfortunately, my classroom library does not have any nonfiction books at their reading levels. It is important for my students to read nonfiction at their levels because they would be doing so independently in class and at home every day, and they need to be able to understand what they are reading. I am requesting 9 sets of nonfiction leveled reading books for my students to read throughout the day.

Having access to nonfiction books at their level will allow my students to apply comprehension skills, gain background knowledge on various subjects, develop their academic vocabulary, and explore concepts to which they have limited exposure to in the fiction they read.

Lastly, reading and understanding nonfiction is a skill they will need for the rest of their educational and working lives.
