My students need books like Dividing Eden, By Your Side, Lord of Shadows and others to engage them during independent reading time.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Many of my students are first or second generation Americans. Some are learning to read English for the first time. Others are just turned off to reading because of the difficulties they have with it or their inability to find interesting books. Reading is not a priority in many of their households and many students don't even own a library card. The only exposure they have to reading is in my classroom.
My students need access to books they love!
Since almost all of the students at my school receive free or reduced-price lunch, they may have limited access to the books they love and want to read at home. Their primary source for getting books to read is our school library. They work hard every day to learn what is required and then some. Reading for pleasure is an important part of becoming a lifelong reader. These books are what they "enjoy" reading. Please help me instill a love of reading in my students.
My Project
My students use the classroom library on a daily basis. My students need new books for the classroom library. Every child can learn to love reading when presented with the right book. I have hand selected books which, in my experience, inspire students to read them. The titles are all engaging and are popular choices for the students in my school. These stories have engaging plots which can easily capture a student's interest and show that that reading does not have to be a chore.
Keeping the library stocked with books that my students will enjoy reading is my number one priority.
With these books in my classroom library, I can make independent reading in class a time which students look forward to, instead of one which they try to get through with "fake" reading. With these books, I hope to teach my students that there is a book for everyone and that they can become lifelong readers.
