Help me give my students books I can read aloud to them. Even 4th, 5th and 6th graders loved to be read to.

My Students
Our school has a diverse population with a high percentage of students with Native American heritage. It is also considered a high poverty school with approximately 90% of the students receiving free or reduced-price lunches.
Do you remember visits to the library when you were young?
Exploring the shelves, looking for a book that would take you on an exciting adventure. Remember the excitement of getting to check out a book? My students are avid readers that devour all the books in our library. The students love coming to the library to get books and explore worlds outside their small community.
In this small, rural town community, our resources are low. The students depend on our school library because most do not have access to books outside of school. The students who will be in my library come to school with needs that go beyond academics. Let's create a space that allows them to feel welcome.
My Project
Every time the students come into the library I read them a story. You might think this 'storytime' is just for little children but even my 6th graders love to be read to. These books will be used to read to all my classes during our lesson time in the library.
I act out the book and the students respond with questions and predictions.
Reading to students helps them understand expression, tone, and develop listening skills. Listening to a story I read the students can understand the change in my tone when reading different characters. It helps them develop the skills needed to process what is being read to them.
It also gives them a chance to 'think aloud'. I am able to stop and ask questions about what I am reading. At the beginning of the year, I use my thinking dialogue to help them understand how to 'think' through a book they are reading.
