This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students attend a highest poverty school in an inner city urban district with approximately 85% English Language Learners. They all have IEPs for reading or math.
They are in Lab because of their low levels of reading achievement.
I am always looking for ways to get them to read independently and accurately. I am only one teacher and I cannot always give them the attention they need to practice reading. Reading independently for a student who has reading difficulties is often a struggle. I want them to be able to practice their independent reading accurately and fluently.
The students will be able to experience a three-pronged approach to reading. They will hear the correct pacing, hear the correct pronunciation, and most importantly hear good expression. They are able to read it as many times as necessary before reading to me and answering comprehension questions.
My Project
I am asking for six heavy duty CD players for my students to practice their reading fluency, accuracy ,intonation, and expression.
My students do not always have someone to read to them or someone they can read to.
This project gives the students the materials to practice good reading which will translate to better reading scores and encourage them to read more.
The students will be able to experience a three-pronged approach to reading. They will hear the correct pacing, hear the word being pronounced accurately, and most important hear good expression. They are able to read it as many times as necessary before the second reading and answering comprehension questions.
First they do a "cold read" to me to get a baseline of their fluency, accuracy and expression and graph their Words Per Minute (WPM). Then they read the same passage three to six times, or more if needed, with a reading CD program over two to three days. When they think they are ready they read to me a second time. They graph their progress and want to gain at least 10-15 WPM over the first cold read. They can see their personal progress as their WPM increases. They will see that when they practice they will see progress!
