Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are from a low socioeconomic neighborhood in Las Vegas, Nevada, which results in little to none of the basic supplies being provided for them. Regardless of their backgrounds, my first grade students come to school every day with smiles on their faces and are eager to learn.
Although research shows living in a low socioeconomic neighborhood correlates to lower educational achievement, my students are the exception.
My students work hard and strive to do their personal best each day. They are kind, caring, inquisitive and have great aspirations for their futures.
My Project
My students want to become better readers. Magnetic white boards are a mobile and versatile tool that will allow my students the opportunities to practice writing and spelling skills, as well as manipulating magnetic letters as they work to make words and connections between words.
The use of sound phones will allow my students to read aloud to themselves, which will help improve their phonemic awareness, a good predictor of later reading success or difficulty.
Magnifying glasses are a fun tool for students to use as they search for vocabulary and sight words around the classroom, and in the books they are reading.
