My Students

My students are kindergarten students from an urban setting. My school is a non-profit and I spend a lot of money out of pocket every year in my classroom. They are being introduced to the school setting. I teach in a small group setting and the time they spend in centers is used to catch them up and teach the curriculum to it. I have students at all different levels so centers are necessary. They are hard workers. They come in with limited language arts and mathematics skills. I spend a good quarter every year teaching letter knowledge and number sense. Sixteen of my students tested as not on track according to NWEA MAPs.

My Project

These materials will help to make my students better readers. When they come into my class they often do not even recognize letters. These books will allow me to introduce reading to them and then push them forward in their reading. Exposure to grade level text is important and needed in order to prepare them for their future education and school experience. These books will allow them hands on experience with text and also grow with them as their learning grows. In my experience the best tool to teaching reading is grade level books. Help me offer that tool to my students.
