Read It, Tap It, Use It - Alternative Forms Of Energy

My students need 18 books about reusing/recycling, wind power, and solar power.

If one up-to-date energy resource book motivates one student to dedicate his/her professional career to the research and development of environmental awareness, then the world could be a "greener" place! As the Media Center Specialist at a public Montessori elementary school with 175 students, ranging from prekindergarten to fifth grade, I serve as an educator to a diverse student body eager to learn.

Due to budgetary constraints and media center space limitations, our current collection of science and energy related books are outdated and are in need of replacement. Our school is undergoing renovations at this time. The final product will include a more spacious media center. Thus, I will have not only ample space to house updated energy books, but I am eager to introduce more current literature that our students can share with their peers and the community.

Through the utilization of up-to-date energy related resources, our students could not only learn to identify problems with current energy sources but also recognize the strategies being employed to address such concerns. Because environmental issues are so widespread and prevalent today, I feel strongly that our students should be afforded availability and accessibility to educational resources which could help guide self-directed interventions.

Education is an empowerment tool. School aged children are in the ideal position to share knowledge which could better our environment. As an eager-to-teach educator, I truly feel that it is my civic responsibility to impart knowledge or lead students to knowledge through reading which can improve the environment and therefore, the lives of those around us.
