My Students

First graders come to school with a passion and desire to learn. I want to share my passion with them, especially in the area of reading. First graders just grin from ear to ear when the "ah-ha" moment hits them and they realize that they can read. That's what makes them so much fun to teach. It's especially hard when I catch them reading when we're learning math, and I have to take the books away from them.

My students attend a Leader in Me school on the outer edges of the city.

We are beginning our third year as a Leader in Me school and our emphasis this year is on academics. The students will create their own goals for the year, both academically and socially.

All my students are energetic, thoughtful and have a love/passion for learning new things. Each student has a leadership notebook where he/she will track the growth that they make towards their goals. Once they reach one goal, we'll celebrate it, and then they'll create a new goal.

My Project

My students need chromebooks to allow for greater access to web-based programs for reading, comprehension, and writing.

Student Leaders take ownership of their own learning and the students need to have greater access to technology to hear, read, and answer questions about the topics they will read about.

Center time during the day will provide the time that they need to work on their reading and writing goals and be able to track their success in fluency, sight words, comprehension, and writing. They will be able to write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts about the topic, and provide some sense of closure.

I hope to have students make their own choices in what they would like to read. The Article-a-Day web-based program from ReadWorks will give students a chance to independently choose a topic, read about it, focus on vocabulary and comprehension and write a response to their reading.

Through this website, my students will be able to choose topics that interest them. Students read more when they have a choice in what they read, and these chromebooks will provide a way to help my students grow stronger in reading.
