My students need computers to work on our daily reading program, we are an intensive reading class of special education students with low reading levels.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are an intensive reading class of special need students. We need computers for the students to practice reading comprehension every day, in addition, we use the CD players to listen to the books, while reading them. My students are at the lowest level of reading in the school.
We are a middle school, located in the north part of Miami.
Most of the students in our school come from low income families and all of my students are in the free lunch program. One of my goals is to expose the students to read as much as possible and create in them a habit of reading. Most of the students do not have Internet in their homes, therefore, the school is their only opportunity to practice computer skills and work with reading programs that are computer based. The computer programs help each student improve their reading skills in addition to class room instruction. I believe that good reading skills give the students confidence in all the school subjects and increases their chances of graduating from high school.
My Project
My students are very excited with the idea of getting two computers and CD players in our class as we have many audio books and no CD players for them. We will use the computers and CD players on a daily basis to practice reading and to do classroom projects and research. In order for the students to reach grade level reading, the students need to practice reading as much as possible across the curriculum. The speakers will be used to listen to information from my computer to the entire class and for special projects with educational documentaries.
I believe that every student in my class has the potential to succeed in whatever field they choose in the future.
I give them positive reinforcement every day, I let them know that with hard work and effort they can make it in this country. They behave well and work very hard with the resources we have now. The computers and CD players will bring a lot of joy and enthusiasm to them to read more and continue learning.
