My students need a library by authors around the world to help them see diverse perspectives through reading.

My Students
Louise Rosenblatt believes that literature is a mirror (that reflects the experiences of the reader) but also a window (that allows the reader to experience the lives of others.) In my World Literature class, both are important.
My students are eager readers; excited to learn about the world they live in.
Throughout the year, they enthusiastically journey through each continent by reading literature that helps define that regions values. My school is a lovely, close-knit community that feels more like a family than a school. The only downside to this: my students don't get a lot of exposure to the world outside our school walls. World Literature is their ticket to people and cultures around the world, the best way for me to help them build empathy for people different than them, and the lens that helps them understand what all human have in common, regardless of their country, religion, or country.
My Project
My students will use this library as a choice library. Each year, we do several choice reading projects, and the library will provide them with more options for reading around the world. While this reading is supplemental to the required texts we read as a class, it is essential to their affective development as readers.
Because of this donation, my students will gain perspectives about the world they have previously only learned about through their history textbooks.
They can experience the tragedy of the Sudanese Civil War through the eyes of the Lost Boys, they will see the power of words through the words of Malala, and travel to enlightenment with Siddartha. This World Literature library will help my students become world citizens.
