Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a low income/high poverty school in Los Angeles. At my school 100% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. Many of them are second language learners. Despite there circumstances they are eager to learn and discover the world around them.

They are "the questioners" always try to discover how the world works.

They are inquisitive and always asking questions. My students want to become better readers and writers. They are constantly trying to better their knowledge.

My Project

There are so many strategies that good readers know how to use that make them good readers. But how do you become a "good" reader. I will be using these picture books to teach my students how to use all the different reading strategies.

They will use these books to learn about theme, comparing and contrasting, making predictions, asking questions and so much more.

Using these picture books allows my students to practice these skills without the intimidation of using grade-level text. Once they become experts with these reading skills they can easily begin to transfer them to hard text.

These books will also be used to create class discussions on history, character traits, the Civil Rights Movement and so much more.
