Read And Writing History (And Herstory, too!)

My students need colored paper, 12 stopwatches and a variety of paired books, fiction and non-fiction, to explore eras of US History. After reading, they will create 'foldables' that represent a timeline of the US.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Knowlton's classroom raised $826

My Students

When you were a kid and the teacher said, "Take out your Social Studies books," did you want to just crawl under your desk? Did you find history dreadfully dull? One year I was privileged to have a teacher who taught history through stories and that is when my love of history began.

My students attend a small K - 5 elementary school in a rural Maine town.

The poverty level is very high in this area, but our children are bright and promising, and they will make a difference in this town and in this state someday. Edmund Burke said, "Those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it." Sadly, Social Studies has been taking a back seat to reading, math and science in our schools. There is so much pressure to raise test scores in these areas that there is little time left to spend on history or other social studies strands. I have found that students take an interest in history when they read historical fiction, the characters help make the history real and relevant to them. The facts in the book begin to make sense. Often while they are reading they want to know more about the history. Why did these things happen as they did? Why did the leaders make the choices they did? How did that impact the individual? ...the community? ...the world?

My Project

I plan to integrate history and reading and make it come alive through stories. I would like to purchase pairs of historical fiction and non-fiction books on the same topic. I will be teaching the skills of reading and comprehension and students will also be learning and discovering their past. As they read they will take notes, write mini-essays, and create maps and diagrams of the historical event they are studying. They will preserve and present their work in lapbook form. A lapbook begins as a file folder. The folder creates a base for students to attach their 'foldables' and mini-books. Foldables are created from colored paper, they could be 'lift the flap' or 'waterfall' or even a 3-dimensional pop-up. The foldables provide lots of writing surface in a very small space. Each historical event they study over the course of the year will have its own lapbook and, eventually the lapbooks will be combined to form a student-made timeline of American History

I know from experience that fifth-graders love to learn, especially when they are have creative ways to share their work.

They love to ferret out facts independently and impress the adults with what they have learned. Pairing fiction and non-fiction and integrating Social Studies with reading and writing just makes sense in today's busy classroom. The students will get the direct instruction they need in reading and writing and while also being self-directed learners in social studies. Win! Win!
