My Students

My special education students come to school every day with smiles on their faces and ready to learn. They are eager to please and to work hard. But from the moment the bell rings, they struggle. Academics do not come easy for my students. Many struggle in all areas: reading, writing, and math. They fall farther and farther behind their peers and their confidence dwindles. Although there are many possible reasons for this, one cause is clear.

The challenge is poverty.

My special needs students attend an elementary school that has the most students in poverty as well as the most English Language Learners district-wide. We are a Title I school where greater than 80% of our students receive free lunch. Our school has some of the greatest teachers in the district, but our test scores show that our students are still below district and state averages. Furthermore, our school has a low graduation rate, and studies show that the risk of dropping out of high school starts in elementary. As teachers, we want the very best for our students, but we are faced with heavy challenges.

My Project

My special education students come to my classroom each day to work on reading and writing. My students are so behind in reading that they have to leave their general education classroom to come learn in my resource room. They come to school every day ready to learn, but struggle with basic reading and writing skills. Most of my students have learning disabilities (commonly known as dyslexia). I also have many students who are English Language Learners. Many of my students also have AD/HD. These factors have made reading and writing challenging for my students. As a teacher, I am always seeking new and exciting ways to activate their brains and to help them learn to read!

I want my students to enjoy learning and to have confidence in their reading and writing skills.

With this set of "Reading & Writing Skills Folder Game Libraries" from Lakeshore Learning, I believe my students will be excited to learn! For example, my students and I will gather around the circle table to engage with these games. We will pull games from the vocabulary box, such as "Bug Hunt" and "Let's Jam!" and learn to read together! The vocabulary games will be especially helpful with my students who are learning English. Then, once my students have learned how to play the games and have built their confidence in reading, they can play the games independently as the activities are self-checking. Each library of games is ready to play, so I can focus on teaching my students the reading and writing skills for each folder rather than taking time to prep each game. Thanks to your generosity, my students will learn phonics, grammar, comprehension, language, and so much more!
