My Students
In my classroom, I see kids who hate to read. Most are not on grade level and are striving to be each and everyday. I want to provide a stable environment for my learners, which includes varying grade level materials and tables conducive to both one-on-one work, as well as group work.
Our school is one that has won many awards and honors for high achievement, but there is a small population whom I see, that need additional support and attention, This would require special learning materials and seating.
My Project
I need an area in my classroom where I can work with students either one-on-one or in small groups. I also need materials that are of high interest to secondary students to maximize their reading comprehension. More often than not, materials are geared towards elementary students when my secondary students needs comprehension and fluency materials, too. Being that they are high school level students, I want something that is high interest that will not look too immature for my sixteen, seventeen, or eighteen year old students. They deserve a chance to work towards grade level reading goals regardless of what grade level they are in.
The book based materials offer high-interest reading passages that teenagers will actually enjoy reading.
In order for me to help the kids grow and become more confident readers, they actually have to read! This is actually more difficult than it sounds, especially when they get to be older; the frustration of not being a reader is typically in full effect. I work with my kids one-on-one every day, and with the help of the new table, I'll be able to work with small groups as well, on the high-interest activities I've requested.
