Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our school is a Title 1 school in Albuquerque, and the entire school population of 770 students would benefit from the Read and Ride project. Students visit the library monthly with their English/Language Arts classes. After checking out a book the students would have the opportunity to read a book while riding on the exercise bike. The library is also open for lunches, and teachers of all subjects use the library for lessons and activities. The bikes would be used daily.
Students in middle school no longer have recess, and are expected to sit in classes for 6 hours a day.
The goal of the Read and Ride project is to promote literacy and physical activity by allowing students to ride a stationary bike while reading. Research has shown that activity can increase self regulation and improve concentration. Our school has over 50 students with documented Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and using the bikes would allow those students, and everyone else, to utilize their gross motor skills to alleviate the anxious and fidgety behavior many students display during class. The bikes could also function as a motivator for some students since they would only be allowed to use the bikes while reading or working on assignments.
