My students love to read. They love to be read to. They love to dissect a book, analyzing character, plot, and setting.
I teach 1st grade in rural Northern California.
I have 28 inquisitive 1st graders who come to school eager to learn. My students love to play, do art, and study science. Living in the state of California, my students have been dealt the short end of the stick. Funding for classrooms in California has been dramatically cut and it has filtered down to the students.
My Project
I am asking for 40 reading journals. These journals will be used to analyze books we are reading. We will study and record story elements like plot, character and setting. In addition to discussing all of these story elements, students will be held accountable. They will all have to write responses to the stories we read. So many times the same kids answer questions about the stories orally, but having students respond in writing will hold each child accountable.
There journals will enhance our district's reading programs.
Students will have to stretch themselves beyond orally responding. Since each child will have a journal, each child will be held accountable to respond. No longer will the quiet children not have a voice. They will all have a voice through their journals.
More than half of students from low‑income households
